Instrument Rating (Restricted)

The Instrument Rating (Restricted), which used to be known as the IMC rating, enables the holder to fly in cloud or conditions of bad visibility both inside and outside controlled airspace, with very few restrictions on airfield or en-route weather.

It is therefore the most useful addition to a pilot’s skills, giving flexibility for planning interesting trips.

The minimum requirements laid down by the CAA for the IR(R) are:

  • 25 hours total experience since gaining a PPL of which 10 hours must be Pilot in command (five of these hours must be cross-country).
  • 15 hours flying training on instrument flying.
  • Pass the Flight Test.
  • Ground instruction to pass the written paper.

We carry out the flying training on well-equipped Piper PA28 Warrior aircraft or if required a Cessna 172SP. All training is done on a one-to-one basis following both the CAA approved AOPA syllabus and our own thorough training programme.
