Airfield Update 12th April 2021

After more than two long months the end is in sight and the Government has issued a Roadmap Out of Lockdown which includes guidance for General Aviation.

Flight training for all pilots, and flights with an instructor, have resumed. We are now open and following COVID-secure guidance. The rules on social contact still apply. Outdoor gatherings must still be limited to 6 people or 2 households, and no indoor mixing will be allowed.

GA activities should take place in line with the wider restrictions. Travel should be minimised as far as possible. The full guidance from the Dept for Transport can be found here.

  • We are very happy to have everyone back flying at the airfield. In order to minimise the need to visit Operations please remember to book out online at CloudbaseGA.com. It is likely that Ops will ask you on the radio if you have booked out if they can’t see it on the webpage.
  • The ground in front of the clubhouse although now quite dry is still quite sparse and until the sun has encouraged some more grass, the visitors line and the area in front of the clubhouse has been fenced off. Please taxi to the west of the parked aircraft to reach the pumps or when leaving or returning to your hangar.
  • Drone testing has been taking place to the west of hangar 8. This area will be cordoned off by orange fencing so that no-one can inadvertently taxi through it.
  • The ladies and the gents are both being refurbished along with the new extension so facilities are somewhat limited. There are portaloos outside Operations and the new disabled loo will be available for ladies. However, it is not yet completely finished so prepare for dust and building detritus.
  • When the wind is from the west the shorter Runway 25L will be the default runway for the time being. The main 25 runway has displaced threshold boards on it making it the same length as 25L. The boards also mark the threshold of the shorter runway. Again the grass is still sparse on the main runway from the very wet conditions late last year.

Bar and Clubhouse

The bar is now open and serving food and drink outside on the lawn. From the 17th May subject to the rule of six we will be able to server food and drink in the Clubhouse and, fingers crossed, all restrictions will be lifted on the 21st June! We have opened on the 12th and the tent will be up so we can take advantage of the sunsets in the possible April showers! Look forward to seeing you all then.

Trial Flying Lessons

Due to the Coronavirus crisis we are offering an extensions on all trial lessons purchased after the 23rd March 2019. Contact Ops to discuss making a booking.

Brief history of White Waltham Airfield

Fairey Rotodyne at Farnborough 1959

In 1928, the de Havilland family aquired the land and formed the de Havilland School of Flying which opened in 1935. The MOD requisitioned it for use during World War II and in 1940 it became the HQ for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) whose members were responsible for the delivery of all aircraft to and from RAF stations. During the war years the ATA achieved a remarkable 309,000 aircraft movements enabling the RAF to concentrate exclusively on operations.
White Waltham has also been home to Fairey Aviation, manufacturers of aircraft such as the Gannet and Rotodyne. It has been a civilian airfield and the home of the West London Aero Club since the early post-war years.
